Art Nudes on film

Refraction – “As light passes from one transparent medium to another, it changes speed and bends”

This abstract set of fine art nudes came about drinking wine one night with my wife at the dining room table (ha, I know sounds like the start of many stories..) Above our table we have strong spot lights, holding the glass above the table I noticed the shadow and slightly contorted fruit bowl through the wine glass. I soon had many of our glasses out and was carefully examining light filtering through (refracting) which led to a shopping spree, eyeballing every garage sale I passed. This series was shot with some willing test models and a new camera to really play with in the studio, the Fuji GX680III. The Fuji soon became one of my favorite cameras, with it’s ability to macro focus I was working just inches from some of these glasses. We shot using Kodak Tri-X 120 black and white film for strong contrast and well defined grain.

To date we have created 14 single edition refraction prints sized 20×24, all in the darkroom with our print partner Dalmation Lab. Each print starts out being shot in our Myrtle Beach studio. A typical studio set up would take 2 hours, the complexity of shooting in to and through stem and crystal glassware was controlling the placement and bursts of light and avoiding, where possible, the highlighted spots of reflected light in the glassware. And this was before we asked a model to join us and actually shoot some film.

Digital tests were used for this on a Nikon D800 with 105 macro lens, prints are available upon request sized 11×14 up to 16×24.
